Today’s announcement by the Prime Minister that the Australian Rail Track Corporation has brought forward a project to replace hundreds of kilometres of track between Adelaide and Tarcoola will help secure jobs for South Australians.

Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP praised the announcement and said that it built upon the hard work already done by the Federal Government to help support the steel industry in South Australia and across the country.

“This announcement by the Prime Minister and ARTC will go a long way to help see the Arrium steelworks through a very difficult period as the steel industry contends with a severe weakening of demand for its product across the globe.”

“The Federal Government has been working tirelessly with Arrium, the state Government and other stakeholders over the past few months to ensure the continuation of the plant at Whyalla and has implemented such measures as a review of Asian steel imports to protect against dumping.”

“The Anti-Dumping Commission will report back by early-April and I look forward to its advice on what other measures can be put in place to ensure that our local steel industry has a level playing field when competing with foreign imports.”

“As Minister for Industry I will continue to use every lever available to me to help protect jobs and promote economic growth in South Australia and around the country.”
