Turnbull Government Delivers Historic Education Reforms

23 Jun 2017 Media release

This week the Australian Education Amendment Bill passed through both Houses of Parliament, delivering real needs-based funding with an extra $23.5 billion for schools across Australia over the next ten years (2018-2027).

“The passage of these reforms delivers funding that is allocated fairly between schools, and removes deals made by Labor which meant students were treated differently just because of the state or territory they live in or the school they attend.” Mr Pyne said.

The Treasury Laws Amendment (GST Low Value Goods) Bill also passed both Houses. This new law will require overseas suppliers and online marketplaces with a turnover of $75,000 to apply the GST on sales of low value goods.

This will create a level playing field to help Australian businesses grow and generate more jobs by removing the unfair advantages foreign businesses had with respect to the GST.

The Social Services Legislation Amendment (Welfare Reform) Bill was introduced into the House of Representatives this week, which includes a two year drug testing trial for 5000 new recipients of Newstart and Youth Allowance in order to identify and help people with drug issues.
