Media release The interest shown by the Member for Lyne, Rob Oakeshott, in the position of Speaker in the House of Representatives will be carefully considered by the Opposition.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives will be of central importance in the next Parliamentary term.
The Opposition has previously been supportive of the current Speaker, Harry Jenkins, continuing in the role, but there are also many talented people within the Coalition who could fulfil the role of Speaker or Deputy Speaker.
We will be consulting with the Independents and the Government before Parliament reconvenes and make an announcement regarding the Speakership and Deputy Speakership in the near future.
