Parents and kids to celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week

Media release The Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today encouraged students, teachers, and parents to get involved in the 17th National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2015, being held from 31 August to 6 September.
“National Literacy and Numeracy Week is a fantastic event on the school calendar, and I hope children all around Australia are getting ready to celebrate reading, writing, and mathematics at their schools,” Minister Pyne said.
“I encourage all parents, grandparents, and carers to get involved as well, because when you’re involved in learning you can help to improve literacy, numeracy, and educational outcomes for your children.
“Ideas on how parents can get involved in their children’s education can be found on the new Learning Potential mobile app. This great, free app offers fantastic tips and advice for parents on how kids can get the most out of reading, writing, and mathematics.”
“Literacy and numeracy is more important to students than ever before, with studies, such as the recent Literacy & Numeracy Skills and Labour Outcomes, continuing to highlight the important correlation between strong literacy and numeracy skills and employment outcomes,” he said.
Minister Pyne said the winners of the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards will be awarded during National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2015.
“One highlight of National Literacy and Numeracy Week this year will be the announcement of the winners of the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards on 4 September in Gunnedah, north eastern New South Wales, the town where Dorothea spent much of her childhood,” Mr Pyne said.
“These awards honour Dorothea Mackellar, one of Australia’s best loved poets, and I wish all the young poets who have taken part in this competition the best of luck.”
