Opening of the 44th Parliament

17 Oct 2013 Media release

I can advise that once the necessary writs are returned, the Prime Minister intends to ask the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO, to summon the Parliament to return on Tuesday 12 November 2013.

With the opening of the 44th Parliament the Coalition looks forward to fulfilling the undertakings given to the Australian people.

We are committed to building a stronger economy, abolishing the carbon tax, ending the waste, stopping the boats, cutting red tape and building the infrastructure of the 21st century.

As we have promised, the first item of legislative business for the Government will be the introduction of a bill to abolish the carbon tax.

When it has passed the Parliament it will lower costs for Australian businesses and manufacturers, boost growth, increase jobs and ease cost of living pressures for households.

On average, households will be around $550 better off in 2014‑15 than they would have been with the carbon tax in place.

The proposed Parliamentary sitting pattern for the 2013 Spring sittings is attached.
