Oakeshott/Windsor stop debate
The Gillard Government has lost another vote on the floor of the Parliament, saved once more by the technicality requiring an absolute majority, Christopher Pyne, Manager of Opposition Business said today.
"The Government lost a motion to suspend standing orders 74 to 75," Mr Pyne said.
"Only one more vote was needed for a debate to commence on a motion moved by Bob Katter MP, requiring the Government to take immediate action on the export of live cattle to Indonesia," he said.
Mr Katter's motion sought to ensure the humane treatment of animals and the protection of Australian industry.
Had just one of the two independents, Robert Oakeshott or Tony Windsor, supported the motion, it would have carried and a debate would have occurred.
"Any grazier in the electorates of New England and Lyne might well ask what exactly their Federal Members of Parliament are doing, putting the interests of a broken and bad Government ahead of the livelihoods of their constituents," Mr Pyne said.
