New Deputy Chair strengthens the CSIRO Board

Ms Shirley In’t Veld, an experienced board director with broad energy sector knowledge, commerce and law background and extensive experience as a senior business manager, has been appointed as the new Deputy Chairperson on the CSIRO Board.

Announcing the appointment, Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP said Ms In’t Veld, who has been a CSIRO Board member since June 2012, was well placed to assist the CSIRO Board Chair in ensuring the proper and efficient performance of the functions of CSIRO.

“CSIRO’s capacity to promote scientific endeavour and capture the power of science for the benefit of all Australians will be supported by this appointment’ Mr Pyne said.

“Ms In’t Veld’s substantial business leadership skills, industry links and connections will continue to benefit the Board as it furthers its collaborations between science and industry” said Minister Pyne.

“Ms In’t Veld’s appointment ensures ongoing corporate knowledge that will benefit the CSIRO board. Her skills and experience complement those of the other board members.

“I warmly congratulate Ms In’t Veld’s on her appointment and thank Ms In’t Veld for her willingness to take on the additional responsibilities if the Deputy Chairperson position. I look forward to continuing working with the board as CSIRO maintains and expands its place as Australia’s peak national science agency.

Ms In’t Veld’s appointment as the CSIRO Board Deputy Chairperson commenced on 14 April 2016.

Ms In’t Veld is an experienced board member and chairperson. She offers a valuable mix of skills and experience with her commerce and law background, broad knowledge of the energy sector and extensive experience as a senior business manager.

Ms In’t Veld was the Chief Executive Officer of Verve Energy, a State Government owned electricity producer in Western Australia, from April 2007 to April 2012. From 1997 to 2007 she held senior positions with Alcoa Australia including as Vice President Primary Business Development, Alcoa. She started her career as a commercial lawyer with Mallesons and also held senior legal, commercial and marketing positions with WMC Resources Ltd, Bond Corporation and BankWest.

Ms In’t Veld serves on the boards of Asciano Ltd, DUET Group, Perth Airport and the National Broadband Network (NBN). She is Chairperson of the Sustainability Committee of Asciano and is a member of the CSIRO Energy Strategic Advisory Committee. Ms In’t Veld is also a member of The Takeovers Panel

Industry group representation positions which Ms In’t Veld has held include board member of the Energy Supply Association of Australia and a member with the Packaging Council of Australia and the Aluminium Council of Australia. She was a board member with the Co-operative Research Centre for Landscape Evolution in Mineral Exploration (CSIRO) and the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies in WA.

Ms In’t Veld received a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce in 1978 from Melbourne University.
