Millions reached through Government's higher education information campaign

25 Feb 2015 Media release

New figures from Senate Estimates have revealed that the Government’s higher education information campaign was extremely effective in reaching students with the facts about higher education, the Minister for Education and Training, Christopher Pyne said today.

“The campaign was designed to raise the level of understanding about how our higher education system operates and inform people of the great benefits of a tertiary education,” Mr Pyne said.

“The campaign was focussed on engaging with young people considering a tertiary education. It was focussed on engaging them online and heavily promoted the campaign website highered.gov.au on all material,” he said

The four week campaign reached almost four million on Facebook and saw 72,533 interacting with posts or the Facebook page. There was almost 300,000 website page views on highered.gov.au and 165,000 unique visitors.

“Despite the ludicrous and incompetent claims from some that $500,000 was spent on a call centre, it was revealed in Senate Estimates that only $6,179 was spent.

“Before rushing to issue press releases, Labor and the Greens should have waited for the facts. The facts are millions of Australians have been better informed about our higher education system.

“The previous Government spent half a billion on advertising over their six years in office and should surely be embarrassed to even raise the subject,” Mr Pyne said.
