Memo to Queensland Government: School funding refresher

14 May 2015 Media release

It seems the recently elected Queensland Government wasn't paying attention when the then Education Minister, Bill Shorten and the previous Federal Labor Government did a pea and thimble trick on QLD school funding back in 2013.

Here is a quick refresher:

  1. Queensland never signed up to the school funding model.
  2. Before the 2013 election, the Rudd Government removed $1.2 billion from the school funding model for states that never signed up, including $794 million for Queensland.
  3. The Coalition, once elected, restored the $1.2 billion, including the $794 million for Queensland.
  4. The Queensland Government received $794 million in additional funding for their schools they wouldn't otherwise have received.
  5. This Commonwealth Government happens to be providing record funding for schools, $69.5 billion over the next four years.
  6. In Queensland Commonwealth funding for schools will grow 28.8 per cent from 2014/15 to 2018/19.

On top of this, Queensland continues to benefit from the $70 million Independent Public School programme, the $243.8 million National School Chaplaincy Programme and our $16.9 million investment to improve teacher training so graduate teachers are well prepared for the classroom.

No matter how you look at it, Queensland is receiving more Commonwealth funding than ever before.
