How will the Government pay for Bradley
The Shadow Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne, welcomed the release of the Bradley Review into Higher Education today.
“In particular the Coalition welcomes the Review’s acknowledgement of the need to move towards a more student-centred model for funding rather than an institution-centred model,” Mr Pyne said.
“Recommendations that would lead to a reduction in the noose of bureaucracy that sits around the Higher Education sector’s neck deserve sincere consideration by the Rudd Government,” he said.
“The Coalition will approach the recommendations regarding regional universities with great care, given the important economic and social contribution regional campuses bring to communities. In the event regional universities choose to amalgamate there is no reason why campuses would need to close.
“The pressure is now on the Deputy Prime Minister to outline how Labor intends to pay for the sweeping recommendations in the Review, and the conservative estimate of $6.5 billion in costs.
“The cupboard is bare; what is left for Higher Education?
“The mishandling of the Budget has left no money in the bank to deliver on meaningful Higher Education reform without plunging the Federal Budget deeper into deficit.
“The Coalition will now consider the report in detail and use it to inform future policies in this area,” Mr Pyne said.
