Young locals in Sturt have taken up the opportunity to be a part of one of the Australian Government's major environmental initiatives and are undertaking environmental protection and restoration works across a number of sites around Adelaide.

Bob Baldwin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Federal Member for Sturt, Christoper Pyne MP, today visited the Green Army team to see them in action working on the Highbury Aqueduct Project.

Mr Pyne welcomed the project today and congratulated the young people involved in the Green Army team.

“Work has already commenced on the ground in the 50ha River Torrens Reserve in Highbury,” Mr Pyne said.

“The site is a significant public area of interest and the team will focus on constructing trails, managing woody weeds and repairing or replacing fencing to ensure biodiversity restoration is protected.

“I’m looking forward to visiting again down the track to see just what a difference they will have made.”

Parliamentary Secretary Baldwin said it was great to see first-hand the benefits and improvements being made to the region through activities undertaken by the Green Army.

“Green Army teams have been delivering real environmental outcomes across the country and the team here at Highbury have their own unique project,” Mr Baldwin said.

“These young men and women are not only generating real environment and conservation benefits for this community, but they are gaining valuable training and experiences to help them prepare for the workforce or further training or improve their career opportunities.”

The Green Army is a key Government commitment with $525 million budgeted over four years. The Programme encourages practical action to support local environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia, providing training to thousands of young Australians by 2018.

This investment in the Green Army will bring the Government's total investment in natural resource management to more than $2 billion over four years.
