An exhibition which highlights simple but ingenious inventions and shines the spotlight on Australian innovation has opened at the University of South Australia (UniSA) today.

Innovation Factory – Invent and Play is the latest traveling exhibition from Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre.

Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Christopher Pyne said the exhibition illustrated that often the simplest ideas resulted in the most ingenious inventions.

“Australia is a nation renowned for its great ideas – and this is emphasised in Questacon’s Innovation Factory exhibition,” Mr Pyne said.

Supported by Raytheon and UniSA, Innovation Factory highlights simple, everyday machines at home, school, work or play, challenging the idea that high-tech electronics are the most important technology in our lives.

“Innovation and ideas are words on the tips of everyone’s lips right now.

“We’ve just released our National Innovation and Science Agenda, which will help transform Australia into a global innovation leader.”

Innovation Factory comprises 18 hands-on exhibits which let visitors experiment with simple machines— gears, cams, levers, pulleys, pneumatics, wheels or electric circuits—to discover how simple machines are used to create ingenious inventions.

“The exhibition celebrates a broad range of inventions, from the quirky to the very simple,” Mr Pyne said.

“It also showcases Australian inventors and the process of designing and refining an idea before achieving success.”

Innovation Factory runs from 18 December 2015 to 17 February 2016 and is located on level 2 of the Kaurna Building, City West Campus, University of South Australia.
