Education plan with no funding and no answers

21 Sep 2012 Media release

The Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister have today visited schools that stand to lose almost $800,000 combined per year according to leaked Gonski Panel modelling.

Ms Gillard visited the Independent Catholic School Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta which will be $235,623.90 a year worse off according to the Gonski Panel modelling.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Anthony Albanese visited Ashfield Public School in New South Wales which will be $538,803.14 worse off a year.

“The modelling appeared in the media last month and was confirmed by the Prime Minister and Schools Minister, Peter Garrett to be ‘Gonski Panel modelling’,” said Christopher Pyne, Shadow Minister for Education.

“Today in a speech, Peter Garrett said they have examined the Gonski modelling and ‘made adjustments where necessary’. It is unclear if this means the shortfall for 3,254 schools in the Gonski modelling representing $1.5 billion a year will be paid in full on top of the $6.5 billion.

“At this stage no one has any idea of how the Government intends to fund this enormous new expenditure, deliver a budget surplus and pay for other multi-billion dollar promises.

“Labor’s own backbench want to know where the money is coming from. It’s time for some answers, Prime Minister,” Mr Pyne said.
