Early NAPLAN results better for parents and students

Media release Results from this year’s NAPLAN assessment will soon be available to all students and parents across Australia.
Minister for Education and Training, Christopher Pyne welcomed the early release of individual student NAPLAN reports, with a mail out already underway in Queensland, and distribution in other states and territories to be undertaken in coming weeks.
Mr Pyne said the Government is delivering on its commitment to providing faster turnaround of NAPLAN results which can only be of benefit to parents, students and teachers.
“Returning NAPLAN results as quickly as possible is a priority of the Australian Government,” Mr Pyne said.
“It is very pleasing to see further reductions in turnaround times for NAPLAN results this year.
“This is a significant improvement on what used to happen when results weren’t available until late in the school year, meaning the opportunity to address any issues apparent in those results may have been lost,” Mr Pyne said.
Today's release of the national level NAPLAN information is two weeks earlier than last year. NAPLAN data released by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) provide a clear picture of 2015 literacy and numeracy achievements, at the national, state and territory levels, and where there has been improvement from past years.
NAPLAN assesses the capabilities of over 1.1 million students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in five key areas of foundational skills which are Reading, Persuasive Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy.
The results show that on average, more than 92.5 per cent of the over 1.1 million school students who took part in this year’s national literacy and numeracy assessment achieved at or above the national minimum standards across all domains.
The full NAPLAN National Report will be released in December 2015. Individual school information will also be available on the My School website in early 2016.
The transition to NAPLAN online from 2017 is expected to provide even faster results to parents and teachers.
“Literacy and numeracy are essential skills for students to master. NAPLAN online will give a much more accurate picture of students’ strengths and weaknesses in these areas, which will allow teachers to develop more targeted ways to help kids improve.
“I would like to thank ACARA for their excellent work in making it possible for NAPLAN results to be made available even earlier than last year,” Mr Pyne said.
