Astronomy leaders advise on strategic stargazing

Solutions to maximise performance and efficiency for our nation’s astronomers was at the heart of discussions today as Australian astronomy leaders met in Canberra to discuss how to capitalise on the sector’s strengths.

The Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, welcomed the first meeting of the reformed Astronomy Governance Working Group, which will provide advice on how to continue to deliver outstanding science that solves many challenges.

“The Australian Government is thinking strategically on how it can help this important sector optimise opportunities in a changing world,” Mr Pyne said.

“This diverse group draws experts from various areas of the sector and across different generations.

“People benefit every day from the astronomy sector’s discoveries, including wireless communication, medical imaging and big data.

“The Australian Government prizes the work of Australian astronomers. These scientists are critical in generating smart solutions, innovative products and in creating new industries.”

Mr Pyne said the Australian Government was working closely with the sector to ensure that it can put in place key governance arrangements that will enable Australian astronomers to better access world class facilities.

He said Government looked forward to receiving the advice from the group, which agreed to its Terms of Reference at its first meeting.
