Another day, another reckless lie from the NTEU

19 Feb 2015 Media release

Reports that the government is withholding modelling suggesting massive price rises for students in a deregulated higher education environment is completely wrong and just another reckless attempt by the NTEU to scare the Australian public.

It is reasonable and responsible for the Department of Education to avoid taking any actions which might set price signals in a deregulated environment. Anyone with an ounce of knowledge of the sector would agree. The NTEU have yet again shown their ignorance of the sector in their blind opposition to these reforms.

The NTEU-Labor-Greens irresponsible and reckless scare campaign is a fraud. Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the University of Western Australia have recently released their expected fees under deregulation showing modest fee increases.

They have clearly demonstrated that Australians can trust their universities to set reasonable fees and look after students.

Students will pay around half of the cost of their course fees on average. Students won’t pay a dollar upfront for their share. Every cent can be borrowed from the taxpayer and repaid only when they start to earn over $50,000. The loan will be indexed at CPI under the Government’s new package. Additionally if the individual has a young child and is the primary care giver their loan interest will be paused for five years.
