$267 million for Schools in Sturt

30 May 2017 Media release

Students in the electorate of Sturt are one step closer to receiving a $267 million funding boost over the next decade after the Turnbull Government’s landmark reforms to school education passed the House of Representatives.

The new school funding model, which will commit an extra $18.6 billion for Australia’s schools over the next decade, will benefit 24,049 students, across 41 schools in the electorate of Sturt.

Member for Sturt, The Hon Christopher Pyne MP, says the landmark school funding model will provide a fair, transparent funding model across schools in his Electorate of Sturt; helping students to achieve and succeed from early education to finishing their year 12 studies.

“The new funding model will ensure that no matter which school a child attends, funding will be distributed fairly, transparently and will truly be needs based; a far cry from the Labor Government’s 27 separate school funding models they falsely claimed was the Gonski funding model”, Minister Pyne said.

“For many families in my electorate of Sturt, school funding is a top priority, and this new transparent system will help parents understand where exactly Federal Government education funding goes.

“A new schools funding estimator has been set to help Sturt parents, teachers, principals and school communities see exactly how they stand to benefit from the Turnbull Government’s new $18.6 billion needs-based schools funding plan.

“The new online estimator showed that schools across the local area would benefit from a funding increase of $267 million over the next decade, delivering long-term funding certainty for schools and communities.

“Everyone can see for themselves exactly how our plan will benefit their school by visiting education.gov.au/qualityschools and clicking through to the Schools Funding Estimator.

“Our plan factors in the background, family life, levels of disability and socioeconomic status of each student and school to ensure funding is truly needs-based and fair,” he said.
