  • $152,000 to be spent to fix dangerous sections of road in Sturt in 2017-18 funding round
  • On average, black spot projects reduce fatal and injury crashes by 30 per cent
  • $684.5 million committed to fixing black spots from 2013-14 to 2020-21

Road safety in the electorate of Sturt has received a boost with a new round of funding announced under the successful federal Black Spot Programme.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester and Federal Member for Sturt, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced funding of $152,000 to fix 2 black spots on local roads.

The approved projects in the Sturt electorate are:

  • Installing a roundabout at the intersection of Jury Avenue and Maple Avenue Rostrevor: $94,000; and
  • Installing a roundabout at the intersection of Ashbrook Avenue and John Street at Payneham: $58,000.

The Hon Christopher Pyne MP said the Sturt community would benefit from a safer local road network through the ongoing work to improve black spot locations across the electorate.

"Residents will recognise the history and notoriety of each of these locations. Having specialised funding allocated to fix these dangerous spots is great news for the local community and everyone who drives on these sections of road," Mr Pyne said.

“We are committed to reducing crashes on our roads. Accidents take a huge toll on families, our communities and the economy and I am delighted to see these upgrades approved," he said.

Mr Chester said the projects were recommended under an independent process and would be delivered during the course of 2017-18.

"Every dollar we invest in safer roads helps to change lives and save lives, and the Black Spot Programme is a crucial part of the Turnbull Government's effort to improve the safety and efficiency of roads right around the country," Mr Chester said.

"Governments of all levels have made significant progress over several decades in reducing fatalities but, as the 7.9 per cent increase in the national road toll in 2016 indicates, much more work needs to be done. By investing extra money into fixing dangerous sections of road we are helping to make our local roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

"The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has found that, on average, black spot projects reduce fatal and injury crashes by 30 per cent. That's why the Turnbull Government has committed $684.5 million to the Programme from 2013-14 to 2020-21."
