Christopher Pyne, Federal Member for Sturt, and Julie Bishop, Deputy Leader of the Opposition announced today that a Liberal Government would fund the $7.5 million needed to redevelop the Campbelltown Leisure Centre.
According to a 2009 report by the Australian Sports Commission 20,000 young South Australians are missing out on participating in sporting activities due to a lack of facilities.
“The Campbelltown Leisure Centre redevelopment is a total $15 million upgrade that would turn the existing facility into a ‘state of the art' sports and recreation hub, providing more space for young people to get involved,” Mr Pyne said.
The upgrade will create jobs and provide new courts in the north east of Adelaide for the Norwood Basketball Club, a new pool for State Swim, squash courts and indoor soccer facilities.
“It was meant to be jointly funded by the Campbelltown Council, the State Government, State Swim and Squash SA, with the final funding from the Federal Government for work to begin,” he said.
“Unfortunately the Rudd/Gillard Government rejected the application leaving the redevelopment in the lurch. Meanwhile this Government has overseen billions of dollars wasted in bungles, backflips and backdowns. Worthy projects are rejected while money is spent to fix up Labor disasters.
“I am delighted to be able to commit a Liberal Government to this project; it is vital for Sturt, and vital for South Australia,” Mr Pyne said.
