Handbrake on Hoon Driving

Published 18/5/2009

Hoon driving is increasingly becoming a problem not just in our neighbourhood, but in South Australia as a whole.  The State Government has so far failed to bring any longstanding action to combating this problem.  I believe it is time for action, not talk.

Road fatalities in general, are extremely saddening in our times.  Driving with a blood alcohol content of the legal limit of 0.05 increases the risk of a fatal crash by two times.  This is compared to driving while using a handheld mobile phone, which increases the risk of a fatal crash by four to nine times.  This risk increases with other distractions in the motor vehicle such as GPS, changing CDs and so on.

Hoon driving accompanied with these above factors makes driving all that more dangerous.

I am most interested in gathering information about this issue from constituents in my electorate.  I have formulated a survey which will allow me to pressure the State Government to take action to combat hoon driving.

Survey - Please see the survey and return it to my office either by email or by mail (429 Magill Road St Morris).

Article - I have also written an article in the Sunday Mail about this issue, which you can read here.

YouTube - I have made a short video about hoon driving. See the video here.

Why the HELL is the government taking so long to make a decision? every state in australia has a 1/4 mile drag stip, the only thing available to us is whyalla and thats only 1/8th mile so how the HELL can they not consider doing up AIR to meet new standards. I think they will re-open the virgina raceway (Adelaide International Raceway) but they need to keep entrant fee's at a affordable level because if they dont who is gonna pay to race and do burnouts when they can do that on back streets and pay nothing but take a risk!! also the police need to get involved as well. I recently attended a drag racing event in portland (VIC) and there were 3 cop cars involved in the drag racing. Now this is sending a message that this is the right place to do this kind of stuff and we are here to support that. thats my thoughts......
