The Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett, should act today and assist Mowbray College in Victoria to remain open until the end of the year using special emergency funding available at the Minister’s discretion.
“Mr Garrett should authorise his department to provide an immediate funding injection into Mowbray College of up to $1 million,” said Christopher Pyne, Shadow Minister for Education..
“One of the criteria for special emergency funding is severe financial difficulty. A funding injection could assist Mowbray to remain open until the end of the year, allowing the 1000 students there to complete their studies without disruption,” he said.
“This would not be a bail-out, merely an emergency measure to allow the school to remain open until the end of the year, giving students stability and parents the time to find alternative schooling.
“I am amazed the Minister has not stepped in to provide this funding before the school had to close its doors today. I call on him to immediately authorise emergency funding for Mowbray,” Mr Pyne said.
